The Infant/Toddler (I/T) Specialist provides free technical assistance and consultation to child care centers participating in the Utah Office of Child Care Baby Steps Project and other infant and toddler initiatives. The Infant/Toddler Specialist has completed specialized training in the Program for Infant and Toddler Care (PITC), which is used by Early Head Start for quality improvement projects in many states, and has been identified by other states as the most effective training for I/T Specialists. The ITERS-R (Infant Toddler Environment Rating Scale) is used by the I/T Specialist to evaluate child care rooms’ physical environment, basic care, curriculum, interactions, schedule, program structure, and parent and staff education. The technical assistance given is based on the ITERS observation score. The goal of the program is to increase the quality of care in infant and toddler child care settings.
